Akhtar Hussain, who leads refined fuels marketing at CHS, shares what farmers need to know about changes in E15 fuel sales.

In summer 2019, the EPA removed seasonal restrictions on E15 fuel sales. Akhtar Hussain, refined fuels marketing expert at CHS, explains what has changed and how this modification will impact the agriculture industry going forward.

“This update from the EPA removes a large barrier for retailers and opens up the ability for more retailers to sell E15,” says Hussain. With that drawback eliminated, Hussain expects retailer interest and consumer demand for E15 and other ethanol-based fuels to increase.

“Giving consumers additional fuel choices, as well as giving our distributors those choices, should accelerate adoption of fuels like E15 selling in the consumer marketplace,” explains Hussain. “CHS is the only refiner   that has an EPA-approved misfueling mitigation plan covering its entire Cenex branded retail network, alleviating the need for independentCenex retailers to perform this task on their own. That removes a significant barrier for Cenex retailers. As a farmer-owned agriculture cooperative, expanding options for ethanol blended fuel is important for our Cenex branded retailers and our farmer-owners.”
