Riley Buss, a CHS data engineer, explains how the global digital supply chain unlocks grain marketing opportunities for farmers.

How does your farm connect to the rest of the world? As part of the cooperative system, CHS farmer-owners have access to a digital supply chain that stretches far beyond local grain elevators. A global digital supply chain helps farmers market their grain quickly, efficiently and at the best price, says Riley Buss, data engineer at CHS.

“This connection is a huge benefit,” says Buss. “We can watch the market in real time and see global demand changes for commodities. And we’re able to predict with a good deal of accuracy what supply stocks will be. This gives us agility in getting grain into the global market at the right time.”

Marketing through the CHS cooperative system also establishes end-to-end traceability, so farmers can see where their grain is going, and buyers can know exactly where it’s coming from. “We can provide additional value using the data we get from farmers,” says Buss. “This level of transparency helps us identify and create the opportunities that are best for each operation, whether that’s through the global market or delivering locally to a soybean crushing facility or renewable fuel manufacturer.

“As technology continues changing rapidly, we’ll stay a head of the curve to fulfill farmers’ needs.”
